Farm Tour | Meet the Animals | The Bank Barn | Visitors to the Pond

So'Journey Farm is a 45-acre farm located along House Run Stream and Bristoria Road in Holbrook, Pennsylvania, 14 miles west of Waynesburg in beautiful Greene County.

The goal when the farm was purchased was to raise grass-fed beef and free-range egg layers and roasting chickens that were of superior quality and also contributed to the well being of the land.

The cattle raised here are Scottish Highland Cattle — the oldest recorded bovine in history and wonderfully suited for this hilly terrain. There are currently 7 adult cows (females), two bulls and new calves on the farm, and all (except the calves!) are eating grass and hay only.

This makes the meat from these cattle extremely high in Omega 3's and 6's, cinolaic acids and vitamins, and a natural choice for folks who are interested in eating meat that was raised humanely with no antibiotics or hormones (please see our price list of USDA processed Scottish Highland, grass-fed beef cuts).

Here's a photo of one of the cows and two calves born in February, 2007:

The farm includes a "bank barn" — one located right next to the road on slanted land so that hay and machinery could come in on one level and animals on the lower levels. The upper floor was to hold hay. This barn was built in 1904 and is post and beam construction.

The pond was built by the previous owner and is filled with too-large catfish, bass and crappie, as well as the occasional avian visitors.

It is a marvelous place to have your morning coffee or evening glass of wine, listening to the birds and watching the sunset.

The laying hens are the hardest workers on the farm, running around eating bugs, seeds, grass and fly larvae out of the cow paddies, spreading the manure around and laying big, beautiful eggs. They sometimes hang out at the door waiting for lunch:

The meat birds (roasting chickens) were also very free-range and soon took over the garden. But they were delicious and had that lovely old-fashioned taste, especially nice in chicken and dumplings. A waiting list for this year's batch of birds is already growing.

The farmhouse is a "modified" B&B (sometimes you share a bathroom and all reservations must be made in advance) and hikers, birders, artists and spiritual retreats are encouraged.

Workshops on rug hooking are offered every year and taught by Sandra Brown, owner of So'Journey Farm and certified McGown teacher.
